26. Letter to CSREES on AFRI Program (2004)

Tamara Wagester, C-FARE Executive Director, has communicated with several key policy staff to discuss the positive attributes of CHOICES and how C-FARE can help AAEA better market this valuable product. In Fall 2004, C-FARE began mailing onepage summaries to House and Senate staff as well as to key USDA employees.


27. Grant Writing Preconference (2003)

For a second year, C-FARE and the NAAEA will hosted a Pre-Conference on federal grants at the 2003 AAEA Annual Meetings. Highlights of the program included speakers from USDA, NIH, and EPA. There was also be a question and answer session with past panel managers to provide insight and points of view on how to approach preparing a federal grant. 28. Intellectual Property Rights Briefing (2003)

In November C-FARE partnered with the Crop Science Society of America to arrange educational briefings on Intellectual Property Rights in the Plant Seed Industry. The information presented at the briefings were a reflection of the findings from a workshop organized by Bill Lesser (Cornell Department of Applied Economics & Management) and Martha Mutschler (Cornell Department of Plant Breeding) and sponsored by the Farm Foundation. The scientists met with staff from the House and Senate Agriculture Committees and with various USDA employees through a brown-bag luncheon arranged by the USDA Economists Group.


In November 2002 C-FARE hosted its annual symposium in Washington, DC entitled, “Public Information and the Agricultural and Food System.” C-FARE’s 2002 symposium stimulated debate on emerging data problems relating to agriculture, including significant gaps and other problems that have emerged in economic data series.

The three presentations that served as the catalyst for debate included: Richard Just (UMD) provided an “Overview of Public Information and the Agriculture and Food System,” Bruce Babcock (ISU) discussed “How Can Breakthroughs in Information Systems Impact Local Decisions about Agriculture and the Environment,” and Ted Schroeder (KSU) addressed “Data, Structural Change, and Public Policy: The Case of Mandatory Livestock Pricing.” Symposium participants included USDA employees and members of agricultural interest groups. following the symposium, the speakers and C-FARE board members held an overview for Congressional Staff.

30. Congressional Briefing on Rural Impacts of the Welfare Reform Bill (2002)

On April 15, 2002 C-FARE sponsored a Congressional briefing addressing “Rural Impacts of Welfare Reform.” Representative Dave Camp (MI), who serves on the Ways and Means Committee, hosted the briefing. The opportunity to expand our involvement with Committees outside of the traditional focus is promising. Several Congressional Staffers attended the briefing. Speakers included: Dr. Leslie Whitener (ERS), Dr. Bruce Weber (Oregon State), and Dr. Mark Henry (Clemson University).
